Ashland, Nebraska: Between Omaha & Lincoln with Bombers, Bison & a State Park Worth Staying For

|3 min read

Ashland, Nebraska sits at the midpoint of a 60-mile stretch of I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln — which sounds unremarkable until you learn what's here. On one side of the highway, the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum houses Cold War bombers and intercontinental missiles in a 300,000-square-foot facility that would justify a special trip on its own. On the other side, Eugene T. Mahoney State Park operates year-round with an aquatic centre, observation tower, and camping that books out every summer weekend. And next door, a drive-through wildlife safari lets you cruise past bison, elk, and wolves on the Great Plains.

For I-80 travellers, Ashland is the stop that turns a driving day into a destination day — and with 6 dump stations and a state park campground, you can easily build it into a two or three-day stop.

Where to Camp

Eugene T. Mahoney State Park — The Standout

This isn't a typical state park. Mahoney operates year-round with modern facilities that include an aquatic centre (indoor/outdoor pool complex), an observation tower with views across the Platte River valley, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, and a lodge. The campground has electric and water hookups. Book well ahead for summer weekends and holidays — Mahoney fills fast. Its location between two metro areas makes it popular with both locals and through-travellers.

The Three Attractions

Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum

A 300,000-square-foot facility built around two aircraft display hangars. Inside: B-52 bombers, SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance planes, intercontinental missiles, and the history of America's Cold War nuclear deterrent. Interactive children's gallery, a 200-seat theatre, and enough military hardware to keep you occupied for half a day. This museum is genuinely impressive regardless of your interest in military history — the scale of the aircraft alone is worth seeing.

The museum is right next to Mahoney State Park. You can easily combine both in a single visit.

Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari

A drive-through wildlife park featuring bison, elk, wolves, and other native Great Plains animals in open-range settings. You stay in your vehicle and drive through the habitats — which works perfectly if your vehicle is a truck or tow car (leave the RV at camp). Seeing a bison herd at close range on the Nebraska plains is an experience that connects you to what this landscape looked like 200 years ago.

Mahoney State Park Itself

Beyond camping, the park has enough activities to fill a full day: hiking trails through river bluff forest, the aquatic centre, miniature golf, paddleboats, and the observation tower. In winter, the park offers cross-country skiing and sledding. It's designed for families, and it delivers.

Base Camp for Two Cities

Ashland's strategic position makes it a practical base for exploring both Omaha (30 miles east) and Lincoln (30 miles west) without dealing with city traffic in your RV. Day-trip into either city by car:

  • Omaha — Henry Doorly Zoo (one of the best in the world), Old Market entertainment district, Durham Museum.
  • Lincoln — Nebraska State Capitol, University of Nebraska (Huskers football), Sunken Gardens.
