Amsterdam, New York: Erie Canal History, the Mohawk Valley & Your Adirondack Gateway

|4 min read

The Erie Canal changed America. When it opened in 1825 — 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo — it turned New York into the nation's economic engine and made the Midwest accessible to the East Coast. Amsterdam, New York sits in the Mohawk Valley where the canal's original route runs alongside the Mohawk River, and the history of that waterway is still visible in the towpaths, locks, and stone aqueducts scattered through the valley.

But Amsterdam's real strategic value for RVers is what's north. NY-30 from Amsterdam runs directly into the Adirondack Park — 6.1 million acres, the largest park in the contiguous United States. Larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Great Smoky Mountains combined. Amsterdam is your last supply stop before entering that wilderness.

With 3 dump stations and campgrounds along the Mohawk River, it's a practical stop on the I-90/Thruway corridor and a staging point for Adirondack adventures.

Where to Camp

Arrowhead Marina & RV Park (Rotterdam Junction)

Near Amsterdam with well-maintained grounds and Mohawk River access. Kayak and canoe launch available — you can paddle from camp onto the historic canal waterway.

Frosty Acres Campground (Duanesburg)

South of Amsterdam at 1,250 feet elevation. Full hookups and spacious sites. A more elevated, wooded setting than the valley floor parks.

Royal Mountain Campsites (Johnstown)

North of Amsterdam. Quiet atmosphere with spacious sites and electric hookups. Positioned toward the Adirondack foothills — good staging if you're heading north.

Erie Canal Heritage

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

A free outdoor museum where the Erie Canal crossed Schoharie Creek. Walk the original towpath and see stone canal structures from 1841, including one of the best-preserved canal aqueducts in New York. The site tells the story of how three different canal eras — 1820s, 1840s, and 1900s — each crossed this same creek with progressively more ambitious engineering.

Erie Canalway Trail

Part of the 360-mile trail across New York State following the historic Erie Canal route. The trail passes through Amsterdam and the Mohawk Valley — flat, paved in most sections, and ideal for cycling. You could ride from Amsterdam to Utica, Syracuse, or beyond on this trail. Kayak and canoe launches at Schoharie Crossing and Riverlink Park put you on the water as well.

The Adirondack Gateway

NY-30 north from Amsterdam is your direct route into the southern Adirondacks. Fill up on fuel and stock up on groceries in Amsterdam before heading north — services thin out quickly once you enter the park. The Adirondacks offer:

  • 2,000+ miles of hiking trails including the 46 High Peaks
  • 3,000+ lakes and ponds — world-class canoeing and fishing
  • Dispersed camping on state land (free, primitive)
  • Lake George, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake — classic Adirondack destinations

This is a park you could spend a month in. Amsterdam is where you prepare.

In & Around Amsterdam

  • Mohawk Valley Gateway Overlook Bridge — A 511-foot pedestrian bridge spanning the Mohawk River, connecting Riverlink Park to the south shore. Great views up and down the valley.
  • Riverlink Park — 200 acres of waterfront on the Mohawk with a playground, amphitheater, and ball fields.
  • Walter Elwood Museum — Local history in the historic Old Dutch Church (built 1847-1851).
  • Arkell Museum at Canajoharie (20 miles west) — An impressive collection of American art in a small-town setting. Canajoharie also has a scenic waterfall.
  • Herkimer Home State Historic Site — 18th-century mansion of Revolutionary War General Nicholas Herkimer.

  3. The Mohawk Valley is windy. Secure awnings and outdoor gear, especially spring and fall.

  5. Summer weekends bring heavy I-90 traffic toward Saratoga Springs and Lake George. Travel midweek if possible.
