The southern Maine coast is one of the most visited stretches of shoreline in New England — Kennebunkport, Portland, Old Orchard Beach, and the rocky headlands between them draw millions of visitors every summer. Parking an RV in any of these places ranges from difficult to impossible.
Alfred is the solution. This small inland town sits 15 miles from Kennebunkport and 30 miles from Portland, away from coastal congestion but close enough for easy day trips. Park your rig at a campground next to a quiet pond, and drive to the coast for lobster, lighthouses, and the best food city in New England. Come back to peace and trees.
With 3 dump stations and a scenic campground as your base, Alfred makes the Maine coast accessible without the coastal headaches.

Where to Camp
Spacious Skies Walnut Grove
A scenic retreat in Alfred with easy access to Portland, Kennebunkport, and Old Orchard Beach. Adjacent to Shaker Pond — fishing, kayaking, and paddleboating right from the campground. The setting is inland Maine at its quietest: wooded sites, pond views, and the kind of evening silence that the coast can't offer in summer.
The Day Trips
Kennebunkport (15 miles)
The quintessential New England coastal town. White clapboard houses, rocky shoreline, the Bush family compound at Walker's Point, and lobster shacks where you eat a whole lobster at a picnic table overlooking the water. Dock Square has shops and galleries. The Marginal Way coastal walk in nearby Ogunquit is one of the most photographed paths in Maine. Park in town (or take a shuttle in peak summer) and walk.
Portland (30 miles)
Maine's largest city has become one of the best food cities in the northeastern US. The Old Port district — cobblestone streets, brick buildings, working waterfront — is packed with restaurants, microbreweries, and seafood markets. Eventide Oyster Co., Holy Donut, and Highroller Lobster Co. are local institutions. Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, is in nearby Cape Elizabeth. Budget a full day.
Old Orchard Beach (20 miles)
A 7-mile sandy beach with an amusement park pier. More casual and family-oriented than Kennebunkport — cotton candy, arcade games, and wide flat sand. Good for a beach day with kids.
Lobster
You're in Maine. Eat lobster. The coast between Kennebunkport and Portland is lined with lobster shacks serving whole boiled lobsters, lobster rolls (hot with butter or cold with mayo — this is a regional debate with no wrong answer), and lobster stew. Prices are best from July through October when the catch peaks. A roadside lobster shack meal at a picnic table with a view of the harbour is a non-negotiable Maine experience.
When to Visit
| Season | Highs | Lows | What to Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | 80°F | 58°F | Peak season. Coastal towns are busy. Book campground ahead. Lobster season in full swing. |
| Fall (Sep-Oct) | 64°F | 42°F | Foliage peaks late September to mid-October in southern Maine. Fewer crowds than summer. Apple cider season. The best time if you can handle cooler weather. |
| Spring (Apr-May) | 56°F | 36°F | Mud season. Campgrounds opening. Coast still cold. Off-season pricing. |
| Winter (Nov-Mar) | 36°F | 16°F | Cold. Most campgrounds closed. Portland's food scene is year-round, though. |
Tips
- Sanford (5 miles south) has all grocery and supply stores. Stock up there.
- Coastal parking is limited in summer. Leave the RV at camp, drive to the coast in your tow car.
- Fall foliage peaks late Sept to mid-Oct. The inland roads around Alfred are beautiful — maple-lined and uncrowded.
- Portland's food scene is nationally recognized. Don't treat it as just a lobster stop — the restaurants are diverse and excellent.
Plan Your Alfred Stop
Alfred is where you park to experience the Maine that everyone comes for — the coast, the lobster, the lighthouses, the autumn colour. The quiet inland setting means you're sleeping in peace while the coastal towns handle the crowds. Smart RVing.
